Connector · Rostering and single sign-on platform

**ibl.ai publishes a free Clever agent skill: a SKILL.md that teaches an AI agent to read and write Clever data and expose it as an MCP tool. Download it, connect your own Clever credentials, and run the agent on ibl.ai Agentic OS, where you own all the code and the data.**

Clever connects K-12 district student information systems and identity providers to learning apps. It syncs districts, schools, users (students, teachers, staff, guardians), sections, terms and courses, and provides SSO.

## What is the Clever API, and what can an agent read from it?

Secure Sync exposes districts, schools, users, sections, terms, courses and an events feed for delta syncs. SSO returns the signed-in user via /me. LMS Connect (v3.1) creates assignments and updates submissions in district LMSs.

- API: Clever API v3 (Secure Sync data API, SSO/Identity API, LMS Connect) (REST)
- Access: Partner or license program
- Base URL: https://api.clever.com/v3.0/
- Authentication: OAuth 2.0 authorization code; OpenID Connect; Bearer token (district-app token)

Developers sign up at apps.clever.com/signup and get a sandbox district. Production data needs each district's authorization; Secure Sync, events and LMS Connect need a Clever Complete subscription.

SSO uses https://clever.com/oauth/authorize and https://clever.com/oauth/tokens; user tokens reach /me and the user's own records. District-app bearer tokens from the App Dashboard read district data.

### What can an agent read from Clever?

- **Districts and schools** — /v3.0/districts and /schools/{id} return district and school details.
- **Users** — /v3.0/users returns students, teachers, staff and guardian contacts; multi-role users share one Clever ID.
- **Sections** — /v3.0/sections returns classes that connect users to curriculum (Secure Sync district tokens).
- **Terms and courses** — Districts contain terms and courses; sections link to both.
- **Events** — GET /v3.0/events: created, updated and deleted changes for delta syncs; kept 30 days (Secure Sync only).
- **Signed-in user (/me)** — Returns token type, Clever user ID and district ID after SSO.

### What can an agent write to Clever?

- **Assignments** — POST/PATCH /v3.1/sections/{section_id}/assignments creates or updates an assignment in the district LMS.
- **Assignment deletion** — DELETE /v3.1/sections/{section_id}/assignments/{assignment_id}. Confirm with the user first.
- **Submissions (grades)** — PATCH .../assignments/{assignment_id}/submissions/{user_id} updates a student's submission and grade. Confirm with the user first.

Limits: 1,200 requests per minute per bearer token; over the limit returns 429 with X-RateLimit-* headers. Lists return 100 records by default, up to 10,000 via limit, paged with starting_after/ending_before and next links (district tokens only).

Student education records protected by FERPA: student and staff identities, demographics, class rosters, guardian contacts and grades sent back to the LMS.

## How do I connect Clever to an AI agent over MCP?

As of October 2026 we found no MCP server published by Clever itself.

The practical path is to host a small MCP server that wraps the Clever API v3 (Secure Sync data API, SSO/Identity API, LMS Connect), or to give the agent the calls directly with the SKILL.md below.

On ibl.ai an MCP connection is three records, and a working integration always needs all three:

1. **Register the server** — `POST …/mcp-servers/` with its URL, a transport (`sse`, `websocket` or `streamable_http`) and an `auth_type` of `none`, `token` or `oauth2`.
2. **Create a connection** that holds the credential, scoped to the whole organization (`platform`), to a single agent, or to each user (`user`).
3. **Enable it on the agent** — `mcp-tool` in `tool_slugs` and the server id in `mcp_servers`. Both lists are replaced, not merged, so read the settings first.

Clever supports per-user OAuth, so the server can use `auth_type=oauth2` with `auth_scope=user`: each person connects their own Clever account in the chat the first time the agent needs it.

The field reference is in [MCP server connections](https://ibl.ai/developer/platform/mcp/mcp-connections), and the [/iblai-api-agent-mcp](https://ibl.ai/developer/skills/iblai-api-agent-mcp) skill runs all three steps from a coding agent.

## What does the Clever agent skill do?

The Clever skill is one SKILL.md file named `iblai-connect-clever`. It gives an agent the auth conventions, what to read, which writes need a person's confirmation, the ibl.ai MCP wiring, example prompts and guardrails.

[Download the Clever SKILL.md](https://ibl.ai/developer/connectors/clever/SKILL.md)

Save it as `.claude/skills/iblai-connect-clever/SKILL.md`, or in your agent's skills folder. The ibl.ai platform skills it calls come from one install:

```
npx skills add iblai/vibe --all
```

This connector skill is a starting point maintained on ibl.ai, not part of the iblai/vibe repository.

It was checked against Clever's documentation on October 20, 2026. Test it against your own Clever setup before you rely on it.

### What can I ask a Clever agent to do?

- “List every section a teacher is rostered to in our Clever sandbox district”
- “Pull all Clever events since yesterday and tell me which students changed schools”
- “Find the guardian contacts linked to this student's Clever ID”
- “Create a 'Chapter 4 quiz' assignment in each of my Clever sections and post the scores”

## How do I run a Clever agent on ibl.ai?

[Agentic OS](https://ibl.ai/product/agentic-os) is where the agent runs on ibl.ai: it holds the Clever MCP connection, the model the agent uses, its instructions and its conversation history.

On ibl.ai you own all the code and the data, run it model-agnostic across any LLM, and pay with no per-seat pricing — so you can deploy anywhere, from your own cloud to a fully air-gapped network.

## What else should I know before connecting Clever to an AI agent?

### Is there an official Clever MCP server?

Not that we found as of October 20, 2026: Clever documents the Clever API v3 (Secure Sync data API, SSO/Identity API, LMS Connect), not an MCP server of its own.

The SKILL.md on this page gives an agent the integration directly, and any MCP server you host can be registered on ibl.ai.

### Who can get Clever API credentials?

Developers sign up at apps.clever.com/signup and get a sandbox district. Production data needs each district's authorization; Secure Sync, events and LMS Connect need a Clever Complete subscription.

### Does Clever data leave my infrastructure when an ibl.ai agent uses it?

On ibl.ai, you own all the code and the data. Self-hosted in your cloud or data center, the agent, its MCP connections and its conversation logs stay inside your perimeter.

Because the platform is model-agnostic, you can point the agent at a model you host, so Clever records need not reach a third-party model provider.

### Is the Clever agent skill free to use?

Yes. The SKILL.md is a free download with no sign-up. It assumes you already have Clever credentials, and your agreement with Clever still governs how you use its API.
