Connector · Cloud legal document management system

Last updated: October 20, 2026

**ibl.ai publishes a free NetDocuments agent skill: a SKILL.md that teaches an AI agent to read and write NetDocuments data and expose it as an MCP tool. Download it, connect your own NetDocuments credentials, and run the agent on ibl.ai Agentic OS, where you own all the code and the data.**

NetDocuments is a cloud document and email management service for law firms and legal departments. Repositories hold cabinets, workspaces, folders and documents with versions, profiles (metadata), access rights and audit history.

## What is the NetDocuments API, and what can an agent read from it?

REST calls with GET, PUT, POST and DELETE for documents (content, profile, versions, check-in/out), folders, workspaces, cabinets, search, users, groups, lookup tables and repository logs.

- API: NetDocuments REST API (REST)
- Access: Issued by your administrator
- Authentication: OAuth 2.0

API documentation, OAuth guides and sample code sit on the NetDocuments support site and developer portal, which require registration. Integrations run as a customer's users or a registered client; ISVs join the partner program.

REST apps authenticate with OAuth 2.0 bearer access tokens. Each NetDocuments region (for example US, EU, Canada, Australia) is a separate service, so the client must call the region where the repository lives.

### What can an agent read from NetDocuments?

- **Documents** — Document content, profile (metadata), version list and action history.
- **Search** — Search one or more cabinets with the NetDocuments query syntax; up to 500 results per page with skiptoken paging.
- **Folders and containers** — Folder items and container contents, including subfolders.
- **Workspaces and cabinets** — Workspace information, user cabinets, cabinet settings and custom attributes.
- **Users and groups** — Repository users, groups, group membership and repository logs.

### What can an agent write to NetDocuments?

- **Documents** — Create a document, add a new version, update content, rename, check in or out.
- **Folders and workspaces** — Create or rename folders, file or unfile documents, get or create workspaces.
- **Secured links** — Generate a link to a document that anyone with the link can open. Confirm with the user first.
- **Document and folder delete** — Delete to Deleted Items or permanently. Confirm with the user first.
- **Access rights** — Search a cabinet and modify ACLs on matching documents. Confirm with the user first.

Limits: Search returns up to 500 results per page (default 50) with skiptoken paging. NetDocuments' own Power Platform connector is throttled at 100 calls per connection per 60 seconds; a general REST API limit was not found.

Documents and email are client confidential and often privileged or work product; matter-level restrictions, ethical walls and retention policies must be respected.

## How do I connect NetDocuments to an AI agent over MCP?

NetDocuments Software, Inc. publishes an official MCP server: [NetDocuments MCP](https://www.netdocuments.com/blog/netdocuments-collaborates-with-anthropic-on-legal-industry-mcp/).

Hosted by NetDocuments for ndMAX Enterprise / ndConnect customers. Search, retrieval and drafting from firm documents under the user's existing permissions, ethical walls and audit trail.

You can register that server on ibl.ai as it is, or use the SKILL.md below when you want the agent to call the NetDocuments REST API directly.

On ibl.ai an MCP connection is three records, and a working integration always needs all three:

1. **Register the server** — `POST …/mcp-servers/` with its URL, a transport (`sse`, `websocket` or `streamable_http`) and an `auth_type` of `none`, `token` or `oauth2`.
2. **Create a connection** that holds the credential, scoped to the whole organization (`platform`), to a single agent, or to each user (`user`).
3. **Enable it on the agent** — `mcp-tool` in `tool_slugs` and the server id in `mcp_servers`. Both lists are replaced, not merged, so read the settings first.

For an API key or a service credential, one `token` connection at `platform` scope serves the whole organization; scope a connection to a single agent when that agent needs narrower access than the rest.

The field reference is in [MCP server connections](https://ibl.ai/developer/platform/mcp/mcp-connections), and the [/iblai-api-agent-mcp](https://ibl.ai/developer/skills/iblai-api-agent-mcp) skill runs all three steps from a coding agent.

## What does the NetDocuments agent skill do?

The NetDocuments skill is one SKILL.md file named `iblai-connect-netdocuments`. It gives an agent the auth conventions, what to read, which writes need a person's confirmation, the ibl.ai MCP wiring, example prompts and guardrails.

[Download the NetDocuments SKILL.md](https://ibl.ai/developer/connectors/netdocuments/SKILL.md)

Save it as `.claude/skills/iblai-connect-netdocuments/SKILL.md`, or in your agent's skills folder. The ibl.ai platform skills it calls come from one install:

```
npx skills add iblai/vibe --all
```

This connector skill is a starting point maintained on ibl.ai, not part of the iblai/vibe repository.

It was checked against NetDocuments Software, Inc.'s documentation on October 20, 2026. Test it against your own NetDocuments setup before you rely on it.

### What can I ask a NetDocuments agent to do?

- “Search the Litigation cabinet for the final settlement agreement with Acme”
- “Pull the last three versions of document 4821-7735-1234 and list the changes”
- “File this memo into the Smith matter workspace under Correspondence”
- “List everything added to the Jones workspace in the past week”

## How do I run a NetDocuments agent on ibl.ai?

[Agentic OS](https://ibl.ai/product/agentic-os) is where the agent runs on ibl.ai: it holds the NetDocuments MCP connection, the model the agent uses, its instructions and its conversation history.

On ibl.ai you own all the code and the data, run it model-agnostic across any LLM, and pay with no per-seat pricing — so you can deploy anywhere, from your own cloud to a fully air-gapped network.

## What else should I know before connecting NetDocuments to an AI agent?

### Is there an official NetDocuments MCP server?

Yes. NetDocuments Software, Inc. publishes [NetDocuments MCP](https://www.netdocuments.com/blog/netdocuments-collaborates-with-anthropic-on-legal-industry-mcp/).

You can register it on ibl.ai as an MCP server, or use the SKILL.md when you want the agent to call the NetDocuments REST API directly.

### Who can get NetDocuments API credentials?

API documentation, OAuth guides and sample code sit on the NetDocuments support site and developer portal, which require registration. Integrations run as a customer's users or a registered client; ISVs join the partner program.

### Does NetDocuments data leave my infrastructure when an ibl.ai agent uses it?

On ibl.ai, you own all the code and the data. Self-hosted in your cloud or data center, the agent, its MCP connections and its conversation logs stay inside your perimeter.

Because the platform is model-agnostic, you can point the agent at a model you host, so NetDocuments records need not reach a third-party model provider.

### Is the NetDocuments agent skill free to use?

Yes. The SKILL.md is a free download with no sign-up. It assumes you already have NetDocuments credentials, and your agreement with NetDocuments Software, Inc. still governs how you use its API.
