The Week AI Agents Went Operational
Three things happened this week that, taken together, tell a single story about where AI is heading — and what organizations need to do about it.
WordPress.com opened MCP support for AI agents. As of March 20, AI agents like Claude and ChatGPT can now draft, edit, and publish content on WordPress sites — which power over 43% of the web. The agents can manage comments, update metadata, organize tags, and restructure entire sites. All through natural language commands via the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
Meta deployed AI support agents globally. The Meta AI support assistant now handles account issues across Facebook and Instagram in under five seconds — resolving problems from start to finish, not just suggesting answers. Meta also announced it will "reduce reliance on third-party vendors" for content moderation, replacing human contractors with AI systems for repetitive reviews.
Samsung committed $73 billion to AI chip expansion. Their co-CEO specifically cited "agentic AI" as the demand driver — not chatbots, not image generators, but autonomous agents that organizations need running continuously at scale.
The pattern is clear: AI agents are no longer experimental assistants sitting behind a chat interface. They're operational systems that publish content, handle customer support, moderate platforms, and execute workflows.
The Control Problem Nobody's Talking About
Here's what makes this moment interesting — and concerning.
When WordPress lets you connect ChatGPT to your site via MCP, the agent runs on OpenAI's infrastructure. Your content flows through their pipeline. Your publishing decisions are mediated by their model. You get convenience, but you don't get control.
When Meta deploys AI agents for support, those agents are built by Meta, for Meta. They run Meta's models, follow Meta's policies, and serve Meta's business objectives. That's fine for Meta — they can afford to build it themselves.
But what about the university running 200 course websites? The hospital managing patient communication across departments? The corporation coordinating compliance documentation, product pages, and internal knowledge bases?
These organizations have the same need — AI agents that handle real operational work — but they can't build from scratch like Meta, and they shouldn't be handing their data and workflows to third-party AI providers.
This is the control problem: the infrastructure for agentic AI is being built rapidly (Samsung's $73B bet proves it), but most organizations are being funneled into a model where they rent agents instead of owning them.
Why Ownership Matters More Than Capability
The capability gap between AI providers is shrinking fast. GPT, Claude, Gemini — they all handle most tasks competently. The real differentiator for organizations isn't which model they use. It's whether they own the agentic infrastructure or depend on someone else's.
Ownership means:
Your agents run in your environment. Not on a vendor's servers. In a dedicated sandbox where your data policies, access controls, and compliance requirements are enforced by design.

You set the rules. Safety policies, moderation criteria, response boundaries, data retention — all defined by the organization, not inherited from a vendor's terms of service.

Moxie Marlinspike — the creator of Signal — announced that his encrypted AI company, Confer, will integrate its privacy technology into Meta AI. His motivation? AI chat apps have become "some of the largest centralized data lakes in history, containing more sensitive data than anything ever before."
Moxie's right. And his solution — encryption — is necessary but not sufficient for organizations.
When a university's AI agents handle FERPA-protected student data, or a corporation's agents process trade secrets, the answer isn't just encrypting the conversation. It's ensuring the agents run inside the organization's own environment, where data governance is architectural, not contractual.
Privacy isn't a feature you add. It's a consequence of where your agents live and who controls them.
What Comes Next
Samsung is building the silicon. WordPress and Meta are demonstrating the use cases. Moxie is raising the privacy bar.
The missing piece — and the opportunity — is the organizational operating layer: the platform that lets every institution deploy, connect, and control their own AI agents without building from scratch or surrendering control to a vendor.
