MCP Is Becoming the USB-C of AI — Here's What That Means for Your Organization

Model Context Protocol is rapidly becoming the universal standard for connecting AI agents to tools and data. Here's how it works, why it matters, and what organizations should do about it.

The Protocol That's Quietly Rewiring AI

If you've been following AI infrastructure news, you've probably seen three letters popping up everywhere: MCP.

Model Context Protocol started as an internal project at Anthropic — two engineers wanted Claude to connect to the tools people actually use at work. They called it "Claude Connect." Within months, it had been adopted by OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Apple. In December 2025, Anthropic donated MCP to the Linux Foundation, and a coalition including AWS, Block, Bloomberg, and Cloudflare established the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) to govern it.

This week, newsletter platform Beehiiv became the latest company to ship MCP integration, letting creators connect their accounts directly to AI chatbots for subscriber analytics and content drafts. It's a small example of a much larger trend: MCP is becoming the universal connector between AI agents and the systems they need to access.

Think of it as USB-C for AI. One standard protocol that lets any agent talk to any tool.

How MCP Actually Works

MCP solves a specific problem: AI agents need to know what tools are available, what data they can access, and how to authenticate — all without custom integrations for every combination of agent and service.

Here's the flow:

  1. Discovery: An AI agent connects to an MCP server and asks, "What can you do?" The server responds with a list of available tools, resources, and capabilities.
  2. Authentication: The protocol handles authorization — OAuth flows, API keys, whatever the service requires.
  3. Execution: The agent calls tools through the MCP server, receives structured responses, and can chain multiple tool calls together.

Anthropic's CPO Mike Krieger calls this a "ping-pong of intelligence." When you ask Claude to send a Slack message, MCP is what establishes the connection, tells Claude which Slack tools exist, executes the send, confirms success, and reports back.

Before MCP, every AI integration required custom API wiring. With MCP, you build one server and every MCP-compatible agent can use it.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

The comparison to USB-C is useful, but the implications go deeper.

In the early days of the web, APIs enabled the explosion of Web 2.0 — apps talking to apps, data flowing between services, entire ecosystems built on open connections. MCP is positioned to do the same thing for AI agents.

But here's the critical question most organizations aren't asking: who controls the MCP servers your agents connect to?

When Beehiiv connects to Claude via MCP, the data flows through Anthropic's infrastructure. When a company connects Slack to an AI assistant via a cloud-hosted MCP server, every query, every response, every piece of institutional context passes through someone else's systems.

For consumer tools, this is fine. For organizations handling student records, employee data, health information, financial systems, or classified materials, it's a fundamental architectural decision.

The Case for Owning Your MCP Infrastructure

The real power of MCP isn't connecting to someone else's AI. It's running MCP servers inside your own infrastructure, connected to your own systems, serving your own AI agents.

Consider what a university needs from AI:

  • Search: Agents that can query the course catalog, find mentors, recommend programs — grounded in the institution's actual offerings, not generic web data.
  • Analytics: Agents that pull real enrollment numbers, learner engagement metrics, LLM cost breakdowns, and topic analysis — from live institutional data.
  • Agent Management: The ability to create, configure, and train AI mentors programmatically — not one-by-one through a vendor's dashboard.
  • Conversations: Agents that can hand off to specialized mentors for different subjects, maintaining context across the conversation.

Each of these is a distinct MCP server. Together, they form an interoperability layer that lets AI agents operate across every institutional system — SIS, LMS, CRM, ERP — through a single standard protocol.

  2. It calls get_learner_list and get_sessions to pull real user activity data.
  3. It calls financial analytics to identify the highest-usage mentor and associated LLM costs.
  4. It returns a visualization and summary — all grounded in live data, not hallucinated estimates.

No data left the institution's network. No query was logged by a third-party vendor. The agent, the MCP server, and the data all live in the same security perimeter.

The Standard Is Set — The Question Is Who Controls It

MCP's adoption is no longer in question. With the Linux Foundation governing the spec and every major AI company backing it, this is the protocol AI agents will use to connect to the world.

The strategic question for organizations is whether they'll use MCP to connect their data to someone else's agents — or build their own MCP-powered infrastructure where the agents, the servers, and the data are all under one roof.

The organizations that treat MCP as an opportunity to own their agentic infrastructure — not just consume it — will have a structural advantage that compounds over time. Every new agent, every new data source, every new capability connects through the same standard, on infrastructure they control.

That's not a feature. It's a foundation.
