Clio Manage MCP Server & Agent Skill

Last updated

ibl.ai publishes a free Clio Manage agent skill: a SKILL.md that teaches an AI agent to read and write Clio Manage data and expose it as an MCP tool. Download it, connect your own Clio Manage credentials, and run the agent on ibl.ai Agentic OS, where you own all the code and the data.

Clio Manage is cloud practice management software for law firms. It holds matters, contacts, time and expense activities, documents, calendar entries, tasks, notes, communications and billing records.

What is the Clio Manage API, and what can an agent read from it?

JSON REST endpoints under /api/v4 for matters, contacts, activities, documents (with download), calendar entries, tasks, notes, communications, bills, custom fields and webhooks. A fields parameter selects attributes.

  • API: Clio Manage API (v4) (REST)
  • Access: Public, self-serve
  • Base URL: https://{region-host}/api/v4/ where region-host is app.clio.com (US), eu.app.clio.com, ca.app.clio.com or au.app.clio.com
  • Authentication: OAuth 2.0 authorization code

Developers create an application in the Clio Developer Portal (developers.clio.com) to get a client key and secret, then each firm authorizes the app. Listing in the Clio App Directory has separate launch requirements.

Authorize at https://{region-host}/oauth/authorize, exchange the code at /oauth/token. Codes last 10 minutes, access tokens 30 days, refresh tokens do not expire. Tokens only work in the region that issued them.

What can an agent read from Clio Manage?

  • Matters β€” GET /api/v4/matters.json and /matters/{id}.json, plus a matter's contacts and client.
  • Contacts β€” GET /api/v4/contacts.json for people and companies linked to matters.
  • Activities β€” GET /api/v4/activities.json for time entries and expenses; filter by matter_id, limit 1-200.
  • Documents β€” GET /api/v4/documents.json for metadata and /documents/{id}/download.json for file content.
  • Calendar entries and tasks β€” GET /api/v4/calendar_entries.json and /api/v4/tasks.json.
  • Notes and communications β€” GET /api/v4/notes.json and /api/v4/communications.json.

What can an agent write to Clio Manage?

  • Activities β€” Create time or expense entries against a matter via /api/v4/activities.json.
  • Tasks and calendar entries β€” Create or update tasks and calendar entries for a matter.
  • Notes β€” Add notes to a matter or contact via /api/v4/notes.json.
  • Records (delete) β€” DELETE on a resource removes it from the firm's Clio account. Confirm with the user first.

Limits: Default 50 requests per minute per access token during peak hours, raised off-peak by region. 429 responses carry Retry-After; X-RateLimit-* headers on every response. Index actions return up to 200 records; follow meta.paging.next.

Matters, notes, documents and communications are client confidential and often covered by attorney-client privilege or work product protection.

How do I connect Clio Manage to an AI agent over MCP?

As of October 2026 we found no MCP server published by Clio itself.

The practical path is to host a small MCP server that wraps the Clio Manage API (v4), or to give the agent the calls directly with the SKILL.md below.

On ibl.ai an MCP connection is three records, and a working integration always needs all three:

  1. Register the server β€” POST …/mcp-servers/ with its URL, a transport (sse, websocket or streamable_http) and an auth_type of none, token or oauth2.
  2. Create a connection that holds the credential, scoped to the whole organization (platform), to a single agent, or to each user (user).
  3. Enable it on the agent β€” mcp-tool in tool_slugs and the server id in mcp_servers. Both lists are replaced, not merged, so read the settings first.

Clio Manage supports per-user OAuth, so the server can use auth_type=oauth2 with auth_scope=user: each person connects their own Clio Manage account in the chat the first time the agent needs it.

The field reference is in MCP server connections, and the /iblai-api-agent-mcp skill runs all three steps from a coding agent.

What does the Clio Manage agent skill do?

The Clio Manage skill is one SKILL.md file named iblai-connect-clio. It gives an agent the auth conventions, what to read, which writes need a person's confirmation, the ibl.ai MCP wiring, example prompts and guardrails.

Download the Clio Manage SKILL.md

Save it as .claude/skills/iblai-connect-clio/SKILL.md, or in your agent's skills folder. The ibl.ai platform skills it calls come from one install:

$ npx skills add iblai/vibe --all

This connector skill is a starting point maintained on ibl.ai, not part of the iblai/vibe repository.

It was checked against Clio's documentation on October 20, 2026. Test it against your own Clio Manage setup before you rely on it.

What can I ask a Clio Manage agent to do?

  • β€œList my open matters with no activity logged in the last 30 days”
  • β€œLog 0.5 hours on the Smith v. Jones matter for drafting the motion to compel”
  • β€œShow every task due this week across my matters”
  • β€œFind the engagement letter document on matter 00123 and summarize it”

How do I run a Clio Manage agent on ibl.ai?

Agentic OS is where the agent runs on ibl.ai: it holds the Clio Manage MCP connection, the model the agent uses, its instructions and its conversation history.

On ibl.ai you own all the code and the data, run it model-agnostic across any LLM, and pay with no per-seat pricing β€” so you can deploy anywhere, from your own cloud to a fully air-gapped network.

Which ibl.ai agents work with Clio Manage data?

Which ibl.ai platform skills does a Clio Manage agent use?

  • /iblai-api-agent-mcp β€” MCP connectors for ibl.ai agents, end to end
  • /iblai-vibe-agent-mcp β€” Add the agent MCP tab (Model Context Protocol connector management with featured connectors, custom connectors, OAuth,…
  • /iblai-api-agent-tool β€” Enable or disable an ibl.ai agent's tools via the platform API

What else should I know before connecting Clio Manage to an AI agent?

Is there an official Clio Manage MCP server?

Not that we found as of October 20, 2026: Clio documents the Clio Manage API (v4), not an MCP server of its own.

The SKILL.md on this page gives an agent the integration directly, and any MCP server you host can be registered on ibl.ai.

Who can get Clio Manage API credentials?

Developers create an application in the Clio Developer Portal (developers.clio.com) to get a client key and secret, then each firm authorizes the app. Listing in the Clio App Directory has separate launch requirements.

Does Clio Manage data leave my infrastructure when an ibl.ai agent uses it?

On ibl.ai, you own all the code and the data. Self-hosted in your cloud or data center, the agent, its MCP connections and its conversation logs stay inside your perimeter.

Because the platform is model-agnostic, you can point the agent at a model you host, so Clio Manage records need not reach a third-party model provider.

Is the Clio Manage agent skill free to use?

Yes. The SKILL.md is a free download with no sign-up. It assumes you already have Clio Manage credentials, and your agreement with Clio still governs how you use its API.

Which other data sources can an AI agent connect to alongside Clio Manage?

Which other Legal systems have a connector?

Every connector, grouped by sector, is on the connectors hub.
