Schoology MCP Server & Agent Skill

Last updated

ibl.ai publishes a free Schoology agent skill: a SKILL.md that teaches an AI agent to read and write Schoology data and expose it as an MCP tool. Download it, connect your own Schoology credentials, and run the agent on ibl.ai Agentic OS, where you own all the code and the data.

Schoology is PowerSchool's learning management system. It holds districts, schools, users, courses and sections, enrollments, assignments, submissions, grades, attendance, events, discussions and course materials.

What is the Schoology API, and what can an agent read from it?

Realms (districts, schools, buildings, users, groups, courses, sections) plus enrollments, events, updates, documents, assignments, grades, grading scales, attendance and submissions. Supports multi-get requests and admin CSV export.

  • API: Schoology REST API v1 (REST)
  • Access: Issued by your administrator
  • Base URL: https://api.schoology.com/v1/
  • Authentication: OAuth 1.0a two-legged; OAuth 1.0a three-legged

Consumer key and secret come from the admin Integration menu (or {domain}/api) and are limited to users with the 'Access Schoology API' permission.

Two-legged OAuth for apps acting as the key owner (empty oauth_token); three-legged for user-approved access. HMAC-SHA1 signatures recommended, PLAINTEXT allowed over HTTPS. Re-sign requests after redirects.

What can an agent read from Schoology?

  • Users β€” GET /v1/users and /v1/users/{id}, plus inactive users.
  • Courses and sections β€” Course and course-section realms, including a section's enrollments.
  • Assignments β€” GET /v1/sections/{section_id}/assignments lists graded items (assignments and discussions).
  • Grades β€” GET /v1/sections/{section_id}/grades and /v1/users/{user_id}/grades (paged).
  • Submissions β€” GET /v1/sections/{section_id}/submissions/{grade_item_id}/ lists student submissions.
  • Attendance and events β€” Section attendance records and calendar events.

What can an agent write to Schoology?

  • Users (create/update) β€” POST/PUT /v1/users, including bulk create and update of up to 50 users.
  • User deletion β€” DELETE /v1/users/{id} or bulk delete with ?uids= (up to 50). Confirm with the user first.
  • Assignments (create/update) β€” POST/PUT /v1/sections/{section_id}/assignments.
  • Assignment deletion β€” DELETE on an assignment; Schoology notes this cannot be undone. Confirm with the user first.
  • Grades β€” PUT /v1/sections/{section_id}/grades sets or changes grades and grading-period comments. Confirm with the user first.

Limits: Each user's credits refill every 5 seconds: 50 for the public API. GET/OPTIONS cost 1 credit; POST/PUT/DELETE cost 3. Over the limit returns 429 with Retry-After. Lists page with start/limit (max 200).

Student education records protected by FERPA: rosters, submissions, grades, attendance and messages between teachers, students and families.

How do I connect Schoology to an AI agent over MCP?

As of October 2026 we found no MCP server published by PowerSchool itself.

The practical path is to host a small MCP server that wraps the Schoology REST API v1, or to give the agent the calls directly with the SKILL.md below.

On ibl.ai an MCP connection is three records, and a working integration always needs all three:

  1. Register the server β€” POST …/mcp-servers/ with its URL, a transport (sse, websocket or streamable_http) and an auth_type of none, token or oauth2.
  2. Create a connection that holds the credential, scoped to the whole organization (platform), to a single agent, or to each user (user).
  3. Enable it on the agent β€” mcp-tool in tool_slugs and the server id in mcp_servers. Both lists are replaced, not merged, so read the settings first.

Schoology supports per-user OAuth, so the server can use auth_type=oauth2 with auth_scope=user: each person connects their own Schoology account in the chat the first time the agent needs it.

The field reference is in MCP server connections, and the /iblai-api-agent-mcp skill runs all three steps from a coding agent.

What does the Schoology agent skill do?

The Schoology skill is one SKILL.md file named iblai-connect-schoology. It gives an agent the auth conventions, what to read, which writes need a person's confirmation, the ibl.ai MCP wiring, example prompts and guardrails.

Download the Schoology SKILL.md

Save it as .claude/skills/iblai-connect-schoology/SKILL.md, or in your agent's skills folder. The ibl.ai platform skills it calls come from one install:

$ npx skills add iblai/vibe --all

This connector skill is a starting point maintained on ibl.ai, not part of the iblai/vibe repository.

It was checked against PowerSchool's documentation on October 20, 2026. Test it against your own Schoology setup before you rely on it.

What can I ask a Schoology agent to do?

  • β€œList every assignment in my Biology section due in the next two weeks”
  • β€œShow which students in section 1234 have no grade for the midterm project”
  • β€œPull this month's attendance for my homeroom from Schoology”
  • β€œEnter these quiz scores into the Schoology gradebook for Period 2”

How do I run a Schoology agent on ibl.ai?

Agentic OS is where the agent runs on ibl.ai: it holds the Schoology MCP connection, the model the agent uses, its instructions and its conversation history.

On ibl.ai you own all the code and the data, run it model-agnostic across any LLM, and pay with no per-seat pricing β€” so you can deploy anywhere, from your own cloud to a fully air-gapped network.

Which ibl.ai agents work with Schoology data?

Which ibl.ai platform skills does a Schoology agent use?

  • /iblai-api-agent-mcp β€” MCP connectors for ibl.ai agents, end to end
  • /iblai-vibe-agent-mcp β€” Add the agent MCP tab (Model Context Protocol connector management with featured connectors, custom connectors, OAuth,…
  • /iblai-api-agent-tool β€” Enable or disable an ibl.ai agent's tools via the platform API
  • /iblai-vibe-agent-lti β€” Add the agent LTI tab (LTI 1.3 launch toggle with agent links, signing keys, tools, and platform endpoints) to your…

What else should I know before connecting Schoology to an AI agent?

Is there an official Schoology MCP server?

Not that we found as of October 20, 2026: PowerSchool documents the Schoology REST API v1, not an MCP server of its own.

The SKILL.md on this page gives an agent the integration directly, and any MCP server you host can be registered on ibl.ai.

Who can get Schoology API credentials?

Consumer key and secret come from the admin Integration menu (or {domain}/api) and are limited to users with the 'Access Schoology API' permission.

Does Schoology data leave my infrastructure when an ibl.ai agent uses it?

On ibl.ai, you own all the code and the data. Self-hosted in your cloud or data center, the agent, its MCP connections and its conversation logs stay inside your perimeter.

Because the platform is model-agnostic, you can point the agent at a model you host, so Schoology records need not reach a third-party model provider.

Is the Schoology agent skill free to use?

Yes. The SKILL.md is a free download with no sign-up. It assumes you already have Schoology credentials, and your agreement with PowerSchool still governs how you use its API.

Which other data sources can an AI agent connect to alongside Schoology?

Which other K-12 systems have a connector?

Every connector, grouped by sector, is on the connectors hub.
