1EdTech OneRoster MCP Server & Agent Skill
Last updated
ibl.ai publishes a free 1EdTech OneRoster agent skill: a SKILL.md that teaches an AI agent to read and write 1EdTech OneRoster data and expose it as an MCP tool. Download it, connect your own 1EdTech OneRoster credentials, and run the agent on ibl.ai Agentic OS, where you own all the code and the data.
OneRoster is 1EdTech's standard for exchanging rosters and grades between student information systems, learning platforms and apps: orgs, users, courses, classes, enrollments, academic sessions, line items, results and resources.
What is the 1EdTech OneRoster API, and what can an agent read from it?
Three services: Rostering (GET only), Gradebook (line items, results, categories, score scales, assessment items; create, update, delete) and Resources. REST binding for live calls; CSV binding is a zip of CSV files with manifest.csv.
- API: OneRoster 1.2 Rostering, Gradebook and Resources services (REST and CSV bindings) (Mixed)
- Access: Issued by your administrator
- Base URL: https://{provider-host}/ims/oneroster/rostering/v1p2/ (gradebook: /ims/oneroster/gradebook/v1p2/)
- Authentication: OAuth 2.0 client credentials (v1.2); OAuth 1.0a (v1.1, deprecated)
The specification is public. Credentials come from each data provider (an SIS or rostering hub) at the school or district's direction. 1EdTech certifies conforming products.
1.2 requires TLS and OAuth 2.0 client-credentials bearer tokens. Scopes include .../scope/roster.readonly, roster-core.readonly, gradebook.readonly, gradebook.createput and gradebook.delete (prefix https://purl.imsglobal.org/spec/or/v1p2).
What can an agent read from 1EdTech OneRoster?
- Orgs and schools β Rostering service org and school endpoints under /ims/oneroster/rostering/v1p2.
- Users, students and teachers β User records; demographics need the roster-demographics.readonly or roster.readonly scope.
- Classes and enrollments β e.g. GET /classes/{sourcedId}/students and /schools/{id}/classes/{id}/enrollments.
- Academic sessions and courses β GET /academicSessions and course endpoints for terms, grading periods and courses.
- Line items and results β Gradebook service /lineItems, /results, /categories, /scoreScales (gradebook.readonly).
- Resources β Resource service: descriptions of resources assigned to classes, courses and users (not access to them).
What can an agent write to 1EdTech OneRoster?
- Line items and categories β PUT/POST on gradebook /lineItems, /categories, /scoreScales (gradebook.createput).
- Results (scores) β PUT/POST on /results writes student scores to the provider's gradebook (gradebook.createput). Confirm with the user first.
- Gradebook deletions β DELETE on line items, results and related objects (gradebook.delete). Confirm with the user first.
Limits: Paging uses limit (default 100) and offset (default 0); responses carry X-Total-Count and Link headers. Query parameters filter, sort, orderBy and fields shape results.
Data exchanged is student education records protected by FERPA (in the U.S.): identities, demographics, enrollments and grades. The standard defines the format, not who may see it.
How do I connect 1EdTech OneRoster to an AI agent over MCP?
As of October 2026 we found no MCP server published by 1EdTech itself.
The practical path is to host a small MCP server that wraps the OneRoster 1.2 Rostering, Gradebook and Resources services (REST and CSV bindings), or to give the agent the calls directly with the SKILL.md below.
On ibl.ai an MCP connection is three records, and a working integration always needs all three:
- Register the server β
POST β¦/mcp-servers/with its URL, a transport (sse,websocketorstreamable_http) and anauth_typeofnone,tokenoroauth2. - Create a connection that holds the credential, scoped to the whole organization (
platform), to a single agent, or to each user (user). - Enable it on the agent β
mcp-toolintool_slugsand the server id inmcp_servers. Both lists are replaced, not merged, so read the settings first.
For an API key or a service credential, one token connection at platform scope serves the whole organization; scope a connection to a single agent when that agent needs narrower access than the rest.
The field reference is in MCP server connections, and the /iblai-api-agent-mcp skill runs all three steps from a coding agent.
What does the 1EdTech OneRoster agent skill do?
The 1EdTech OneRoster skill is one SKILL.md file named iblai-connect-oneroster. It gives an agent the auth conventions, what to read, which writes need a person's confirmation, the ibl.ai MCP wiring, example prompts and guardrails.
Download the 1EdTech OneRoster SKILL.md
Save it as .claude/skills/iblai-connect-oneroster/SKILL.md, or in your agent's skills folder. The ibl.ai platform skills it calls come from one install:
$ npx skills add iblai/vibe --allThis connector skill is a starting point maintained on ibl.ai, not part of the iblai/vibe repository.
It was checked against 1EdTech's documentation on October 20, 2026. Test it against your own 1EdTech OneRoster setup before you rely on it.
What can I ask a 1EdTech OneRoster agent to do?
- βConnect to our district's OneRoster 1.2 endpoint and list all classes for the current termβ
- βPull enrollments for every class at Jefferson High using filter and pagingβ
- βWrite these unit-test scores as OneRoster results for the matching line itemsβ
- βValidate this OneRoster CSV zip and tell me which files or columns are missingβ
How do I run a 1EdTech OneRoster agent on ibl.ai?
Agentic OS is where the agent runs on ibl.ai: it holds the 1EdTech OneRoster MCP connection, the model the agent uses, its instructions and its conversation history.
On ibl.ai you own all the code and the data, run it model-agnostic across any LLM, and pay with no per-seat pricing β so you can deploy anywhere, from your own cloud to a fully air-gapped network.

What else should I know before connecting 1EdTech OneRoster to an AI agent?
Is there an official 1EdTech OneRoster MCP server?
Not that we found as of October 20, 2026: 1EdTech documents the OneRoster 1.2 Rostering, Gradebook and Resources services (REST and CSV bindings), not an MCP server of its own.
The SKILL.md on this page gives an agent the integration directly, and any MCP server you host can be registered on ibl.ai.
Who can get 1EdTech OneRoster API credentials?
The specification is public. Credentials come from each data provider (an SIS or rostering hub) at the school or district's direction. 1EdTech certifies conforming products.
Does 1EdTech OneRoster data leave my infrastructure when an ibl.ai agent uses it?
On ibl.ai, you own all the code and the data. Self-hosted in your cloud or data center, the agent, its MCP connections and its conversation logs stay inside your perimeter.
Because the platform is model-agnostic, you can point the agent at a model you host, so 1EdTech OneRoster records need not reach a third-party model provider.
Is the 1EdTech OneRoster agent skill free to use?
Yes. The SKILL.md is a free download with no sign-up. It assumes you already have 1EdTech OneRoster credentials, and your agreement with 1EdTech still governs how you use its API.
