D2L Brightspace MCP Server & Agent Skill

Last updated

ibl.ai publishes a free D2L Brightspace agent skill: a SKILL.md that teaches an AI agent to read and write D2L Brightspace data and expose it as an MCP tool. Download it, connect your own D2L Brightspace credentials, and run the agent on ibl.ai Agentic OS, where you own all the code and the data.

Brightspace is D2L's learning management system for schools, universities and organisations. It holds org units (courses), enrollments, users, content, assignment dropboxes, grades and Brightspace Data Sets exports.

What is the D2L Brightspace API, and what can an agent read from it?

Routes take the form /d2l/api/{component}/{version}/...; lp covers users, enrollments and org structure, le covers grades, content and dropboxes. Data Hub serves Brightspace Data Sets as bulk extracts.

  • API: Brightspace APIs (Valence) and Data Hub / Brightspace Data Sets (REST)
  • Access: Issued by your administrator
  • Base URL: https://{targethost}/d2l/api/{component}/{version}/
  • Authentication: OAuth 2.0 authorization code; OAuth 2.0 client credentials (JWT client assertion)

An administrator registers the app in Brightspace's Manage Extensibility tool, choosing OAuth 2 scopes and the authorization code or client credentials grant, which yields a client ID.

Authorize at https://auth.brightspace.com/oauth2/auth; token at https://auth.brightspace.com/core/connect/token. Scopes look like enrollment:orgunit:read; core:*:* is the fallback. Token lifetime is set from 1,800 to 72,000 seconds.

What can an agent read from D2L Brightspace?

  • My enrollments β€” GET /d2l/api/lp/(version)/enrollments/myenrollments/ (scope enrollment:own_enrollment:read).
  • Classlist β€” GET /d2l/api/le/(version)/(orgUnitId)/classlist/paged/ lists users in a course (scope enrollment:orgunit:read).
  • Grade objects and values β€” GET /d2l/api/le/(version)/(orgUnitId)/grades/ and .../grades/values/(userId)/ (scopes grades:gradeobjects:read, grades:gradevalues:read).
  • Assignment dropboxes β€” GET /d2l/api/le/(version)/(orgUnitId)/dropbox/folders/ and .../folders/(folderId)/submissions/.
  • Users β€” GET /d2l/api/lp/(version)/users/whoami and GET /d2l/api/lp/(version)/users (scope users:userdata:read).
  • Brightspace Data Sets β€” GET /d2l/api/lp/(version)/datasets/bds lists data sets; extracts download per schema and plugin (scope datasets:bds:read).

What can an agent write to D2L Brightspace?

  • Grade values β€” PUT /d2l/api/le/(version)/(orgUnitId)/grades/(gradeObjectId)/values/(userId) (scope grades:gradevalues:write). Confirm with the user first.
  • Enrollments β€” POST /d2l/api/lp/(version)/enrollments/ creates; DELETE .../enrollments/orgUnits/(orgUnitId)/users/(userId) removes. Confirm with the user first.
  • Dropbox feedback β€” POST /d2l/api/le/(version)/(orgUnitId)/dropbox/folders/(folderId)/feedback/(entityType)/(entityId) posts feedback. Confirm with the user first.
  • Users β€” POST /d2l/api/lp/(version)/users creates a user; /users/batch/ creates up to 500 (scope users:userdata:create).

Limits: Token-bucket credits per caller; 429 when exhausted. Headers: X-Rate-Limit-Remaining, X-Request-Cost, X-Rate-Limit-Reset / Retry-After. Paging uses PagedResultSet (Bookmark, HasMoreItems) or ObjectListPage (Next URL).

Grades, submissions, enrollments and user records held by a school are FERPA-protected education records.

How do I connect D2L Brightspace to an AI agent over MCP?

As of October 2026 we found no MCP server published by D2L itself.

The practical path is to host a small MCP server that wraps the Brightspace APIs (Valence) and Data Hub / Brightspace Data Sets, or to give the agent the calls directly with the SKILL.md below.

On ibl.ai an MCP connection is three records, and a working integration always needs all three:

  1. Register the server β€” POST …/mcp-servers/ with its URL, a transport (sse, websocket or streamable_http) and an auth_type of none, token or oauth2.
  2. Create a connection that holds the credential, scoped to the whole organization (platform), to a single agent, or to each user (user).
  3. Enable it on the agent β€” mcp-tool in tool_slugs and the server id in mcp_servers. Both lists are replaced, not merged, so read the settings first.

D2L Brightspace supports per-user OAuth, so the server can use auth_type=oauth2 with auth_scope=user: each person connects their own D2L Brightspace account in the chat the first time the agent needs it.

The field reference is in MCP server connections, and the /iblai-api-agent-mcp skill runs all three steps from a coding agent.

What does the D2L Brightspace agent skill do?

The D2L Brightspace skill is one SKILL.md file named iblai-connect-d2l-brightspace. It gives an agent the auth conventions, what to read, which writes need a person's confirmation, the ibl.ai MCP wiring, example prompts and guardrails.

Download the D2L Brightspace SKILL.md

Save it as .claude/skills/iblai-connect-d2l-brightspace/SKILL.md, or in your agent's skills folder. The ibl.ai platform skills it calls come from one install:

$ npx skills add iblai/vibe --all

This connector skill is a starting point maintained on ibl.ai, not part of the iblai/vibe repository.

It was checked against D2L's documentation on October 20, 2026. Test it against your own D2L Brightspace setup before you rely on it.

What can I ask a D2L Brightspace agent to do?

  • β€œList students in HIST 110 who have not submitted to the Research Paper dropbox.”
  • β€œShow my grade book values for each student in Biology section 3.”
  • β€œEnroll this teaching assistant in all three sections of CHEM 101.”
  • β€œDownload the latest Users and Enrollments Brightspace Data Sets extracts.”

How do I run a D2L Brightspace agent on ibl.ai?

Agentic OS is where the agent runs on ibl.ai: it holds the D2L Brightspace MCP connection, the model the agent uses, its instructions and its conversation history.

On ibl.ai you own all the code and the data, run it model-agnostic across any LLM, and pay with no per-seat pricing β€” so you can deploy anywhere, from your own cloud to a fully air-gapped network.

Where does ibl.ai describe the D2L Brightspace integration?

Which ibl.ai platform skills does a D2L Brightspace agent use?

  • /iblai-api-agent-mcp β€” MCP connectors for ibl.ai agents, end to end
  • /iblai-vibe-agent-mcp β€” Add the agent MCP tab (Model Context Protocol connector management with featured connectors, custom connectors, OAuth,…
  • /iblai-api-agent-tool β€” Enable or disable an ibl.ai agent's tools via the platform API

What else should I know before connecting D2L Brightspace to an AI agent?

Is there an official D2L Brightspace MCP server?

Not that we found as of October 20, 2026: D2L documents the Brightspace APIs (Valence) and Data Hub / Brightspace Data Sets, not an MCP server of its own.

The SKILL.md on this page gives an agent the integration directly, and any MCP server you host can be registered on ibl.ai.

Who can get D2L Brightspace API credentials?

An administrator registers the app in Brightspace's Manage Extensibility tool, choosing OAuth 2 scopes and the authorization code or client credentials grant, which yields a client ID.

Does D2L Brightspace data leave my infrastructure when an ibl.ai agent uses it?

On ibl.ai, you own all the code and the data. Self-hosted in your cloud or data center, the agent, its MCP connections and its conversation logs stay inside your perimeter.

Because the platform is model-agnostic, you can point the agent at a model you host, so D2L Brightspace records need not reach a third-party model provider.

Is the D2L Brightspace agent skill free to use?

Yes. The SKILL.md is a free download with no sign-up. It assumes you already have D2L Brightspace credentials, and your agreement with D2L still governs how you use its API.
