QuickBooks Online MCP Server & Agent Skill

Last updated

ibl.ai publishes a free QuickBooks Online agent skill: a SKILL.md that teaches an AI agent to read and write QuickBooks Online data and expose it as an MCP tool. Download it, connect your own QuickBooks Online credentials, and run the agent on ibl.ai Agentic OS, where you own all the code and the data.

Cloud accounting software for small businesses. Each QuickBooks Online company holds customers, vendors, invoices, bills, payments, sales receipts, the chart of accounts and financial reports such as Profit and Loss and Balance Sheet.

What is the QuickBooks Online API, and what can an agent read from it?

REST entity endpoints for one QuickBooks company (realm): create, read, update and query accounting entities such as Customer, Invoice, Bill and Payment, plus a SQL-like query endpoint and financial report endpoints.

  • API: QuickBooks Online Accounting API (REST)
  • Access: Public, self-serve
  • Base URL: https://quickbooks.api.intuit.com/v3/company/{realmId}/ (sandbox: https://sandbox-quickbooks.api.intuit.com/v3/company/{realmId}/)
  • Authentication: OAuth 2.0 authorization code

Developers register an app on the Intuit Developer portal, which issues sandbox keys and a sandbox company for testing; production keys are issued for the same app. The company owner must authorize the app.

The company owner authorizes the app with the com.intuit.quickbooks.accounting scope. The redirect returns an authorization code and the realm ID (Company ID); exchange the code for an access token and refresh token. Every call needs the token and realm ID.

What can an agent read from QuickBooks Online?

  • Query endpoint β€” GET /v3/company/{realmId}/query?query=<select statement> reads many entities with a SQL-like SELECT; up to 1,000 entities per response.
  • Customers and vendors β€” Customer and Vendor entities: contact details, balances and terms.
  • Invoices and bills β€” Invoice and Bill entities with line items, due dates and open balances.
  • Payments β€” Payment and sales receipt entities recording money received against invoices.
  • Financial reports β€” Report endpoints such as Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow and General Ledger for a date range.

What can an agent write to QuickBooks Online?

  • Create invoice β€” POST /v3/company/{realmId}/invoice creates an invoice for a customer.
  • Create or update customer β€” POST to the customer resource creates or updates a customer record.
  • Record payment β€” Create a Payment entity applied to open invoices; this changes the books. Confirm with the user first.
  • Create bill β€” Create a Bill entity for a vendor, adding an accounts payable liability.

Limits: Production: 500 requests per minute per realm ID and 10 requests per second per realm ID and app; 40 batch requests per minute per realm; a query returns at most 1,000 entities. Throttled calls get HTTP 429; wait 60 seconds before retrying.

Holds business financial records and customer and vendor personal data (names, addresses, tax IDs, bank details on payments). Treat as confidential financial data; limit scopes and log writes.

How do I connect QuickBooks Online to an AI agent over MCP?

Intuit publishes an official MCP server: QuickBooks Online MCP Server.

Local stdio server in Intuit's GitHub org. Runs with your own Intuit app client ID, secret, refresh token and realm ID; CRUD tools for accounting entities and financial reports.

You can register that server on ibl.ai as it is, or use the SKILL.md below when you want the agent to call the QuickBooks Online Accounting API directly.

On ibl.ai an MCP connection is three records, and a working integration always needs all three:

  1. Register the server β€” POST …/mcp-servers/ with its URL, a transport (sse, websocket or streamable_http) and an auth_type of none, token or oauth2.
  2. Create a connection that holds the credential, scoped to the whole organization (platform), to a single agent, or to each user (user).
  3. Enable it on the agent β€” mcp-tool in tool_slugs and the server id in mcp_servers. Both lists are replaced, not merged, so read the settings first.

QuickBooks Online supports per-user OAuth, so the server can use auth_type=oauth2 with auth_scope=user: each person connects their own QuickBooks Online account in the chat the first time the agent needs it.

The field reference is in MCP server connections, and the /iblai-api-agent-mcp skill runs all three steps from a coding agent.

What does the QuickBooks Online agent skill do?

The QuickBooks Online skill is one SKILL.md file named iblai-connect-quickbooks-online. It gives an agent the auth conventions, what to read, which writes need a person's confirmation, the ibl.ai MCP wiring, example prompts and guardrails.

Download the QuickBooks Online SKILL.md

Save it as .claude/skills/iblai-connect-quickbooks-online/SKILL.md, or in your agent's skills folder. The ibl.ai platform skills it calls come from one install:

$ npx skills add iblai/vibe --all

This connector skill is a starting point maintained on ibl.ai, not part of the iblai/vibe repository.

It was checked against Intuit's documentation on October 20, 2026. Test it against your own QuickBooks Online setup before you rely on it.

What can I ask a QuickBooks Online agent to do?

  • β€œList every QuickBooks invoice that is more than 30 days past due, with customer and balance”
  • β€œCreate an invoice for Acme Corp for 10 hours of consulting at $150 an hour”
  • β€œPull last quarter's Profit and Loss and compare it with the same quarter last year”
  • β€œWhich vendors have unpaid bills due this week?”

How do I run a QuickBooks Online agent on ibl.ai?

Agentic OS is where the agent runs on ibl.ai: it holds the QuickBooks Online MCP connection, the model the agent uses, its instructions and its conversation history.

On ibl.ai you own all the code and the data, run it model-agnostic across any LLM, and pay with no per-seat pricing β€” so you can deploy anywhere, from your own cloud to a fully air-gapped network.

Which ibl.ai agents work with QuickBooks Online data?

Which ibl.ai platform skills does a QuickBooks Online agent use?

  • /iblai-api-agent-mcp β€” MCP connectors for ibl.ai agents, end to end
  • /iblai-vibe-agent-mcp β€” Add the agent MCP tab (Model Context Protocol connector management with featured connectors, custom connectors, OAuth,…
  • /iblai-api-agent-tool β€” Enable or disable an ibl.ai agent's tools via the platform API

What else should I know before connecting QuickBooks Online to an AI agent?

Is there an official QuickBooks Online MCP server?

Yes. Intuit publishes QuickBooks Online MCP Server.

You can register it on ibl.ai as an MCP server, or use the SKILL.md when you want the agent to call the QuickBooks Online Accounting API directly.

Who can get QuickBooks Online API credentials?

Developers register an app on the Intuit Developer portal, which issues sandbox keys and a sandbox company for testing; production keys are issued for the same app. The company owner must authorize the app.

Does QuickBooks Online data leave my infrastructure when an ibl.ai agent uses it?

On ibl.ai, you own all the code and the data. Self-hosted in your cloud or data center, the agent, its MCP connections and its conversation logs stay inside your perimeter.

Because the platform is model-agnostic, you can point the agent at a model you host, so QuickBooks Online records need not reach a third-party model provider.

Is the QuickBooks Online agent skill free to use?

Yes. The SKILL.md is a free download with no sign-up. It assumes you already have QuickBooks Online credentials, and your agreement with Intuit still governs how you use its API.

Which other data sources can an AI agent connect to alongside QuickBooks Online?

Which other Small Business systems have a connector?

Every connector, grouped by sector, is on the connectors hub.
