What is the Stripe API, and what can an agent read from it?

REST API with form-encoded requests and JSON responses covering Customers, PaymentIntents, Refunds, Products, Prices, Subscriptions, Invoices, Payouts and more. List methods use cursor pagination (limit 1-100, starting_after).

Anyone with a Stripe account creates keys on the Dashboard API keys page. Sandboxes have their own test keys (sk_test_, rk_test_); live keys (sk_live_, rk_live_) act on real money.

Send the key as the Basic auth username or as a Bearer token. Stripe recommends restricted keys (rk_) with only needed permissions over full-access secret keys (sk_). Restricted keys can be tagged as agent keys, which are subject to approval rules.

What can an agent read from Stripe?

  • Customers — GET /v1/customers lists customers; retrieve one by ID.
  • PaymentIntents and charges — List and retrieve PaymentIntents and charges with status and amounts.
  • Invoices — List and retrieve invoices and their line items.
  • Subscriptions — List and retrieve subscriptions and schedules.
  • Balance and payouts — Retrieve balance, balance transactions and payouts.

What can an agent write to Stripe?

  • Create customer — POST /v1/customers creates a customer record.
  • Create and finalize invoice — Create invoice items and an invoice, then finalize it; finalizing makes it payable. Confirm with the user first.
  • Create refund — Create a refund for a charge or PaymentIntent; sends money back to the customer. Confirm with the user first.
  • Cancel subscription — Cancel a customer's subscription. Confirm with the user first.
  • Create payment link — Create a payment link for products and prices.

Limits: Global limit 100 requests/second in live mode, 25 in sandbox; most endpoints 25/second; Search API 20 reads/second; 50 concurrent live requests. HTTP 429 carries Stripe-Rate-Limited-Reason. Reads average at most 500 per transaction (10,000/month minimum).

Holds PCI cardholder-related data (card brand, last four, billing details) and customer personal data. Full card numbers are tokenized by Stripe, not returned by the API. Refunds move money.

How do I connect Stripe to an AI agent over MCP?

Stripe publishes an official MCP server: Stripe MCP.

Hosted at https://mcp.stripe.com. OAuth, or an agent-tagged restricted key as Bearer; from Dec 2026 untagged keys are refused. Refunds and outbound payments need human confirmation.

You can register that server on ibl.ai as it is, or use the SKILL.md below when you want the agent to call the Stripe API directly.

On ibl.ai an MCP connection is three records, and a working integration always needs all three:

  1. Register the server — POST …/mcp-servers/ with its URL, a transport (sse, websocket or streamable_http) and an auth_type of none, token or oauth2.
  2. Create a connection that holds the credential, scoped to the whole organization (platform), to a single agent, or to each user (user).
  3. Enable it on the agent — mcp-tool in tool_slugs and the server id in mcp_servers. Both lists are replaced, not merged, so read the settings first.

For an API key or a service credential, one token connection at platform scope serves the whole organization; scope a connection to a single agent when that agent needs narrower access than the rest.

What does the Stripe agent skill do?
