ServiceNow MCP Server & Agent Skill

Last updated

ibl.ai publishes a free ServiceNow agent skill: a SKILL.md that teaches an AI agent to read and write ServiceNow data and expose it as an MCP tool. Download it, connect your own ServiceNow credentials, and run the agent on ibl.ai Agentic OS, where you own all the code and the data.

ServiceNow is a workflow platform for IT service management, HR and customer service. Each instance stores records in tables such as incident, problem, change_request, sys_user, the CMDB and knowledge articles.

What is the ServiceNow API, and what can an agent read from it?

The Table API gives create, read, update and delete on any table the caller's roles allow, at /api/now/table/{tableName}. Filter with encoded sysparm_query; page with sysparm_limit, sysparm_offset and the Link header.

  • API: ServiceNow REST API (Table API), REST API Explorer (REST)
  • Access: Issued by your administrator
  • Base URL: https://{instance}.servicenow.com/api/now/table/{tableName}
  • Authentication: Basic authentication (instance user); OAuth 2.0 authorization code (MCP Server Console)

Credentials come from the customer's own instance: an admin creates an integration user with roles that grant table access, or registers an OAuth client. Test calls in the instance's REST API Explorer.

Table API examples use basic auth with an instance user; the calling user needs roles for the table. MCP Server Console supports only OAuth 2.0 authorization code, via Machine Identity Console or an external IdP.

What can an agent read from ServiceNow?

  • Incidents β€” GET /api/now/table/incident with sysparm_query filters, e.g. active=true^priority=1.
  • Change and problem records β€” GET /api/now/table/change_request and /api/now/table/problem.
  • Users and groups β€” Read sys_user and group tables, subject to the caller's roles and ACLs.
  • Any table by name β€” Table API reads any table the caller can access; sysparm_fields limits returned columns.

What can an agent write to ServiceNow?

  • Create records β€” POST /api/now/table/{tableName}, e.g. open a new incident.
  • Update records β€” PUT or PATCH /api/now/table/{tableName}/{sys_id}, e.g. reassign or resolve an incident.
  • Delete records β€” DELETE /api/now/table/{tableName}/{sys_id}; returns 204. Confirm with the user first.

Limits: Table API sysparm_limit defaults to 10,000 records per call and is applied before ACL evaluation; paginate with sysparm_offset or the Link header. Very large limits can hurt instance performance.

Records can hold employee and customer personal data, HR case details and security incident data. ServiceNow offers a U.S. Government Community Cloud and a National Security Cloud for federal use.

How do I connect ServiceNow to an AI agent over MCP?

ServiceNow, Inc. publishes an official MCP server: ServiceNow MCP Server Console.

Native MCP server in the instance; AI admins publish Now Assist skills, Knowledge Graph, Scripted REST APIs, subflows and actions as tools. OAuth 2.0 authorization code only.

You can register that server on ibl.ai as it is, or use the SKILL.md below when you want the agent to call the ServiceNow REST API (Table API), REST API Explorer directly.

On ibl.ai an MCP connection is three records, and a working integration always needs all three:

  1. Register the server β€” POST …/mcp-servers/ with its URL, a transport (sse, websocket or streamable_http) and an auth_type of none, token or oauth2.
  2. Create a connection that holds the credential, scoped to the whole organization (platform), to a single agent, or to each user (user).
  3. Enable it on the agent β€” mcp-tool in tool_slugs and the server id in mcp_servers. Both lists are replaced, not merged, so read the settings first.

ServiceNow supports per-user OAuth, so the server can use auth_type=oauth2 with auth_scope=user: each person connects their own ServiceNow account in the chat the first time the agent needs it.

The field reference is in MCP server connections, and the /iblai-api-agent-mcp skill runs all three steps from a coding agent.

What does the ServiceNow agent skill do?

The ServiceNow skill is one SKILL.md file named iblai-connect-servicenow. It gives an agent the auth conventions, what to read, which writes need a person's confirmation, the ibl.ai MCP wiring, example prompts and guardrails.

Download the ServiceNow SKILL.md

Save it as .claude/skills/iblai-connect-servicenow/SKILL.md, or in your agent's skills folder. The ibl.ai platform skills it calls come from one install:

$ npx skills add iblai/vibe --all

This connector skill is a starting point maintained on ibl.ai, not part of the iblai/vibe repository.

It was checked against ServiceNow, Inc.'s documentation on October 20, 2026. Test it against your own ServiceNow setup before you rely on it.

What can I ask a ServiceNow agent to do?

  • β€œList all open P1 incidents assigned to the Network group”
  • β€œCreate an incident: VPN down for the Boston office, impact 2, urgency 1”
  • β€œWhat changes are scheduled for this weekend?”
  • β€œResolve INC0012345 with the note 'Router replaced'”

How do I run a ServiceNow agent on ibl.ai?

Agentic OS is where the agent runs on ibl.ai: it holds the ServiceNow MCP connection, the model the agent uses, its instructions and its conversation history.

On ibl.ai you own all the code and the data, run it model-agnostic across any LLM, and pay with no per-seat pricing β€” so you can deploy anywhere, from your own cloud to a fully air-gapped network.

Which ibl.ai agents work with ServiceNow data?

Which ibl.ai platform skills does a ServiceNow agent use?

  • /iblai-api-agent-mcp β€” MCP connectors for ibl.ai agents, end to end
  • /iblai-vibe-agent-mcp β€” Add the agent MCP tab (Model Context Protocol connector management with featured connectors, custom connectors, OAuth,…
  • /iblai-api-agent-tool β€” Enable or disable an ibl.ai agent's tools via the platform API

What else should I know before connecting ServiceNow to an AI agent?

Is there an official ServiceNow MCP server?

Yes. ServiceNow, Inc. publishes ServiceNow MCP Server Console.

You can register it on ibl.ai as an MCP server, or use the SKILL.md when you want the agent to call the ServiceNow REST API (Table API), REST API Explorer directly.

Who can get ServiceNow API credentials?

Credentials come from the customer's own instance: an admin creates an integration user with roles that grant table access, or registers an OAuth client. Test calls in the instance's REST API Explorer.

Does ServiceNow data leave my infrastructure when an ibl.ai agent uses it?

On ibl.ai, you own all the code and the data. Self-hosted in your cloud or data center, the agent, its MCP connections and its conversation logs stay inside your perimeter.

Because the platform is model-agnostic, you can point the agent at a model you host, so ServiceNow records need not reach a third-party model provider.

Is the ServiceNow agent skill free to use?

Yes. The SKILL.md is a free download with no sign-up. It assumes you already have ServiceNow credentials, and your agreement with ServiceNow, Inc. still governs how you use its API.

Which other data sources can an AI agent connect to alongside ServiceNow?

Which other Enterprise systems have a connector?

Which other Government systems have a connector?

Every connector, grouped by sector, is on the connectors hub.
