Workday Student MCP Server & Agent Skill

Last updated

ibl.ai publishes a free Workday Student agent skill: a SKILL.md that teaches an AI agent to read and write Workday Student data and expose it as an MCP tool. Download it, connect your own Workday Student credentials, and run the agent on ibl.ai Agentic OS, where you own all the code and the data.

Workday Student is Workday's cloud student system for higher education. Its web services cover student records, admissions, student recruiting, academic advising, student finance, financial aid, transfer credit and campus engagement.

What is the Workday Student API, and what can an agent read from it?

Versioned SOAP services for Student (Student_Records, Admissions, Student_Recruiting, Student_Finance, Financial_Aid, Academic_Advising, Student_Core and more, v47.0), Workday REST endpoints with JSON, and custom reports exposed as web services (RaaS).

  • API: Workday Web Services (SOAP), Workday REST API, Reports as a Service (RaaS) (Mixed)
  • Access: Issued by your administrator
  • Authentication: WS-Security UsernameToken (Integration System User); OAuth 2.0 (REST)

Credentials come from the institution's Workday tenant: typically an Integration System User for SOAP and RaaS, or OAuth for REST. Every call is limited by Workday's configurable security groups.

SOAP requests carry a WS-Security username and password in the SOAP header, usually for an Integration System User. REST uses OAuth and acts as the signed-in user or integration system under Workday's security model.

What can an agent read from Workday Student?

  • Course sections β€” Student_Records Get_Course_Sections returns one section by reference, or all sections if none is given.
  • Student courses β€” Student_Records Get_Student_Course returns student course definitions.
  • Registration schedules β€” Get_Student_Schedules_for_Registration returns student schedules for enrollment.
  • Student accomplishments β€” Get_Student_Accomplishments returns student achievement records.
  • Custom reports (RaaS) β€” Any custom report the tenant enables as a web service can be called for its rows.

What can an agent write to Workday Student?

  • Register a student β€” Put_Student_Course_Registered_Registration creates a student course registration.
  • Drop a registration β€” Put_Student_Course_Dropped_Registration unregisters students from courses. Confirm with the user first.
  • Course sections β€” Put_Course_Sections creates or changes course section details.
  • Program completion β€” Submit_Program_Completion submits a program for completion through its business process. Confirm with the user first.

Student records are FERPA education records; financial aid and student finance services also carry family financial data. Give the Integration System User only the security groups a task needs.

How do I connect Workday Student to an AI agent over MCP?

Workday publishes an official MCP server: Workday Agent-Ready Tools (MCP).

Workday's MCP-based connectors for AI agents; Workday lists Student among the covered areas and scopes actions to the user's identity.

You can register that server on ibl.ai as it is, or use the SKILL.md below when you want the agent to call the Workday Web Services (SOAP), Workday REST API, Reports as a Service (RaaS) directly.

On ibl.ai an MCP connection is three records, and a working integration always needs all three:

  1. Register the server β€” POST …/mcp-servers/ with its URL, a transport (sse, websocket or streamable_http) and an auth_type of none, token or oauth2.
  2. Create a connection that holds the credential, scoped to the whole organization (platform), to a single agent, or to each user (user).
  3. Enable it on the agent β€” mcp-tool in tool_slugs and the server id in mcp_servers. Both lists are replaced, not merged, so read the settings first.

For an API key or a service credential, one token connection at platform scope serves the whole organization; scope a connection to a single agent when that agent needs narrower access than the rest.

The field reference is in MCP server connections, and the /iblai-api-agent-mcp skill runs all three steps from a coding agent.

What does the Workday Student agent skill do?

The Workday Student skill is one SKILL.md file named iblai-connect-workday-student. It gives an agent the auth conventions, what to read, which writes need a person's confirmation, the ibl.ai MCP wiring, example prompts and guardrails.

Download the Workday Student SKILL.md

Save it as .claude/skills/iblai-connect-workday-student/SKILL.md, or in your agent's skills folder. The ibl.ai platform skills it calls come from one install:

$ npx skills add iblai/vibe --all

This connector skill is a starting point maintained on ibl.ai, not part of the iblai/vibe repository.

It was checked against Workday's documentation on October 20, 2026. Test it against your own Workday Student setup before you rely on it.

What can I ask a Workday Student agent to do?

  • β€œList all course sections offered in Spring 2027 for the Biology department”
  • β€œShow this student's registered courses for the current term”
  • β€œRun our 'Holds by Student' RaaS report and summarize holds by type”
  • β€œRegister this student in section BIO-101-02 after I confirm”

How do I run a Workday Student agent on ibl.ai?

Agentic OS is where the agent runs on ibl.ai: it holds the Workday Student MCP connection, the model the agent uses, its instructions and its conversation history.

On ibl.ai you own all the code and the data, run it model-agnostic across any LLM, and pay with no per-seat pricing β€” so you can deploy anywhere, from your own cloud to a fully air-gapped network.

Which ibl.ai agents work with Workday Student data?

Where does ibl.ai describe the Workday Student integration?

Which ibl.ai platform skills does a Workday Student agent use?

  • /iblai-api-agent-mcp β€” MCP connectors for ibl.ai agents, end to end
  • /iblai-vibe-agent-mcp β€” Add the agent MCP tab (Model Context Protocol connector management with featured connectors, custom connectors, OAuth,…
  • /iblai-api-agent-tool β€” Enable or disable an ibl.ai agent's tools via the platform API

What else should I know before connecting Workday Student to an AI agent?

Is there an official Workday Student MCP server?

Yes. Workday publishes Workday Agent-Ready Tools (MCP).

You can register it on ibl.ai as an MCP server, or use the SKILL.md when you want the agent to call the Workday Web Services (SOAP), Workday REST API, Reports as a Service (RaaS) directly.

Who can get Workday Student API credentials?

Credentials come from the institution's Workday tenant: typically an Integration System User for SOAP and RaaS, or OAuth for REST. Every call is limited by Workday's configurable security groups.

Does Workday Student data leave my infrastructure when an ibl.ai agent uses it?

On ibl.ai, you own all the code and the data. Self-hosted in your cloud or data center, the agent, its MCP connections and its conversation logs stay inside your perimeter.

Because the platform is model-agnostic, you can point the agent at a model you host, so Workday Student records need not reach a third-party model provider.

Is the Workday Student agent skill free to use?

Yes. The SKILL.md is a free download with no sign-up. It assumes you already have Workday Student credentials, and your agreement with Workday still governs how you use its API.

Which other data sources can an AI agent connect to alongside Workday Student?

Which other Higher Education systems have a connector?

Every connector, grouped by sector, is on the connectors hub.
